As of July 10, 2025, Google began indexing Instagram and Facebook content, including: Posts, reels, and carousels.
I analyzed the top 10,000 Instagram pages by organic traffic to understand what kind of content Google is showing and how you can adapt your strategy.
Here’s the breakdown of what's ranking from Instagram

- Informational intent, mostly:
- Caption length doesn’t appear to play a significant role in ranking, as short captions are most commonly featured
- These typically show up in place of traditional links, within thumbnails, and in the "Top stories" section on the SERP
Reels
- Informational intent, mostly:
- News
- Celebrities
- Some sport
- Viral content
- UGC product content
- Caption length does not play a crucial role in visibility.
- Short-form videos often appear in place of traditional links, as "Short videos" section within the SERP (not looking at short video tab), and also under "What people are saying" section.
What does this mean?
Instagram content plays more of a supportive role in Google’s search results. It helps round out the SERP, offering more real world signals from brands which can improve authority and engage users. Rather than serving as the primary source of information, it complements other search results by adding visual context and highlighting trending or user-generated angles.
By and large, profiles are ranking primarily around brand queries, so make sure you at least have one of those set up. If you aren't able to invest in multiple posts, try a static 9 grid.
Strategic recommendations for social media teams
If you have a lot of great IG content, a few strategic shifts can give past and future Meta content the strongest chance to get visibility from Google search results.
- Always include a keyword in the caption. If a clear keyword isn’t available, use the brand or product name instead
- A best practice for bios is to include the main keyword and/or brand name
- Identify "comparison" or "vs" keywords and launch a UGC campaign around them to improve visibility and SERP presence
- While hashtags may not be critical for indexation, they can still improve platform visibility
- Keyword-focused content is still highly recommended, especially as younger audiences use platforms like Instagram and TikTok as search tools.
- With that in mind, structure captions using headers and paragraph formats, and make sure ALT text is populated (image content)
- For example: Take your top-performing blog posts and convert them into native video content, complemented by long-form caption
- Analyze the keywords your target is ranking for - especially those tied to SERP features like top stories, video/previews, or thumbnails. Use these insights to create video content that expands your SERP real estate and drives more traffic
- Apply this same strategy to non-branded keywords to warm up searchers to your brand. As brand mentions increase, so does trust and visibility across search engines and AI-driven platforms.
- Another way to research possible keywords that can fuel video content creation:
- Use Ahrefs Keyword Research – plug in your client’s brand/product name or anything else that is important.
- Set target: Instagram.com
- SERP features filter set to include any of the following: Video previews, Top stories, Thumbnail.
- Look for good potential keywords – branded product comparison keywords (including “comparison” or “vs”) have a good chance of providing value, going viral, encouraging user participation through comments and sharing, and ultimately appearing in SERPs
- Also keywords like: (brand/product) review, what is (brand/product).
- Check the SERPs (Short Video section appearing, or Youtube videos, or both), take stock of the videos appearing, create better content (either via an influencer campaign or internally), and promote.
- Some keywords are better suited for longer-form videos on YouTube, others for Instagram. Ideally, create longer-form content and cut it up to serve on other social media platforms, but it needs to be a standalone video.
