TL;DR

Prioritize networking over sessions - Meet as many people as you're comfortable with, connect with speakers after sessions, find Slack community members attending, and consider proximity to venue for extended networking opportunities since connections are often more valuable than content.
Prepare for physical comfort and health - Wear comfortable shoes (you'll be on your feet all day), bring hand sanitizer and wash hands frequently, stay hydrated with a water bottle, take vitamin C before/during/after, charge devices and bring dongles since WiFi usually sucks, and pack a light sweater for cold auditoriums.
Choose the right event for your goals - BrightonSEO San Diego is great for networking due to size, SEOWEEK is best for deep learning (4-day intensive), MozCon is easy for beginners (1-day), SMX Advanced offers smaller intimate settings, and TechSEOConnect is good for niche technical focus.

Be prepared to be overwhelmed. Depending on the event, both from the size - like brightonSEO San Diego, or to the depth of content like SEO Week.

Network like crazy - meet as many folks as you can, or are comfortable with. To me, this is the most value I get from conferences.

If you enjoy a session, walk up and introduce yourself to the speakers and ask questions/make a connection.

Make sure your devices are charged, and bring dongles.
WiFi almost always sucks

Also for me, go with comfort over fashion. You're on your feet for many hours of the day, bad footwear will make it terrible.

Agreed with Sean! NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK! The mot beneficial. No SEO event I've ever been to had people walking around in suits or business professional outfits. Dress comfortable.

Also, wash your hands often and keep hand sanitizer on tap. Keep a waterbottle with you too. You'll dehydrate quickly.

I tend to take vitamin C a few days leading up to, during, and after the conference to keep my immune system up as well.

Oh yes, forgot about washing hands - bring plenty of sanitizer as well. Fist bumps are more common than before, but handshakes still take place quite a bit.

Try and find out people in here that are going. It’s a lot easier to walk up to someone if you at least digitally know them

Thanks for the tips, all! I’m quite a chatty person, so networking is my favorite part of work in general!

Good to note about sanitizer and comfortable shoes!

I’m eager to meet more people in the industry and get to my first event. I know quite a few that are hosted (and I’m located in OKC, so pretty central in the states), but any particular events that I should go to as a first-timer would be great to note.

Brighton and Moz are the big national ones. I’ve been to Brighton and really enjoyed it, I’m sure Moz is great, I just haven’t been.

Noah just posted about TechSEOConnect in the events channel. I’m going this year because I’ve heard great things about. Could be a good one if you want to niche down with a smaller conference.

• Moz (New York & London) used to be amazing - it's not the conference it once was tho :cry: - but it is a one-day conference now, so something easy to dip your toes into.
• brightonSEO San Diego is pretty good, I like it more for networking since there are so many people that attend, and well, it's San Diego
• SEOWEEK (New York) last April was probably the best conference I've been to in a long while - my brain hurt from everything I learned, but it is a four-day conference, which is not for the faint of heart
• SMX Advanced (Boston) is starting to do in-person events again - I did the Boston one this year, it was pretty good.
Outside of that, there are some international ones that I'd love to go to at some point

@user there’s been talk of sending some of my team and I to SMX Advanced next year. I’ve been to Moz Con (in 2018), INBOUND, and Content Marketing World. Beyond the surface level differences with these others, what made SMX worth attending versus another? Trying to glean info ahead of us buying tickets.

hmm - I think the combo of location, smaller conference, and some good sessions which I have found can be hit or miss depending on the conference

I went to the last SMX in San Jose before Covid. It was my first conference. I might have been star studded, but it was for sure a lot of fun and had some interesting talks.

A lot of good advice in here -- some extra ones:

• It might be nice to bring a light sweater if talks are done in an auditorium. Some auditoriums blast AC & you can tend to get cold if you're in a short-sleeve shirt.
• If you have any food allergies, be sure to reach out to the conference staff in advance. Some events will provide accommodations if food & beverages are provided (e.g. severe nut allergy)
• Book your stay within close proximity to the conference if there's no major cost difference. This can help you save on extra transportation costs and give you an opportunity to network longer.

^second @user's point about proximity to the conference. This came in handy when attending INBOUND in September and running back to the hotel nearby when I needed a break from the chaos. Also, not so much professional development-related, but I always try to budget time for sign sightseeing a bit and grounding myself again sessions all day. Shoot, turn this into a networking opportunity and invite people to join you.
