What do y’all do outside the workplace that you feel accelerates your career indirectly?

For me it’s always been serious exercise. I was way out of shape coming out of college and even as my career started moving I felt like I was just coating along.
In late 2010 I moved in with my girlfriend-now-wife and knew I had to get better for the sake of our future, so I got started on an exercise regimen.
The next year I took a pretty big leap + pay bump. Hit some rough patches along the way (having your first kid is such an adjustment), but since starting CrossFit in 2016 I’ve had a steady stream of promotions and nearly 3x’d my annual income.

Can you explain more how you feel exercise has a correlation to career growth? I know you said indirectly, but I'd like to see if you have thoughts around connecting them more.

Buddy you don’t know what you just asked for ????
• I feel better throughout the day. More energy, fresher.
• There’s definitely a sense of “I already did this hard thing so what comes next can’t be that daunting.” That’s a big reason I prefer morning exercise.
• Endorphins are steroids for serious thought. Some of my best ideas come while I’m cooling down or even between sets.
• Serious exercise requires focus, and it trains you to focus harder/better.
• At the same time, I feel like little idea tidbits show up while I’m engaged in the exercise itself. For instance, I’ve been wanting to contribute more to this community and had the start of an idea to post this while running a 400 meter repeat. That idea bloomed when I was resting between repeats (and then I posted it between the next two).
• Exercise programs are a map to progress. There is stimulus, response, recovery, and feedback. I feel like there’s a ton of carryover there to knowledge work.

• I raised my step-son - it infinitely expanded my empathy, understanding, & compassion for training/working with/managing team members
• home remodels DIY style - I've done 4 large tear-it-down to the studs & rebuild projects that I planned, scheduled, hired/did myself, managed, and acquired supplies, within a budget - I now see project management at work as a very doable thing for me

@Joe Pawlikowski Apologies for the short reply but I got a crazy day. Just wanted to let you know that if you can slack that during workout breaks, you can also get me off my butt to do some pushups, squats like I just did. Thanks for the motivation!

For some reason, every time I play videogames I excel in my career path. Whenever I drop the controller (a little longer than usual), I become stagnant. Hmm.
I wonder :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:.

+1 on exercise.
I also hired a career coach who has helped me on defining the role I really wanted, setting up steps to work on and held me accountable for progress.
Having the outside voice to ask me hard questions and help me work through options has helped me with picking out what’s most important to work on for me and my team.
It’s well worth the investment.

Sent you a DM. Found my coach on LinkedIn - we’d been connected and after we talked a couple of times we worked out the coaching engagement.
