Anyone successfully dealt with a negative SEO issue recently? Been a while since have had to deal with one, but a new client’s anchor text is ~20% “penis enlargement” variants. Unfortunately that is not their business lol. Would love to pick your brain and perhaps partner with you. DM me if this is your jam.

Wow! That sounds like a very large problem. (Sorry, I couldn’t pass that up)

I’m assuming the anchor text is a back link. Is that correct? And Arnold Palmer is the site you are working on?

Have they considered removing or changing these words from the H1 Headline: enhancements, impedance, measurements, and enhanced?
I can’t tell if this is a joke now. lol

Shot in the dark, but I assume that anchor wasn’t due to purchased and redirected domains in the distant past to boost authority? But those are new links directly pointing to the domain?
If true. Oof. What’s wrong with people.

@Kim Higdon These anchors have nothing to do with the topic of the pages/site
@Jonas Sickler These are recent links. Seems pretty clear someone was trying to attack them. That said, my guess is these types of anchors are easy for Google to ignore, so I am not not super-concerned this is what caused them to tank, but would love someone who deals with penis links all day long to confirm. :)

This should be posted in <#C07KJ9BM3N3|> because it's not just an agency problem and it's a larger channel so you'd get more exposure. That said I just saw this yesterday, thought it was interesting about the disavow file.
Negative SEO doesn't work? Disavow file isn't needed any more? I did a little test, and I call BS.

Looks like someone took "growth hack" too seriously...
PS - i would suggest you to ignore because disavow will not help and Google probably ignore these links while deciding sites traffic.

@Kuldeep sharma are you suggesting disavow doesn't work because you have extensively tested it?

So are you saying just ignore the fact that someone appears to be targeting his clients site with these links and irrelevant keywords?
I understand that the generally accepted position is to not worry about disavowing them, but the example (albeit small sample) makes me think it's worth additional testing. Especially if traffic has been significantly impacted.
I think we all know that while Google says some things, it may be about the internet they are wanting to see and direct us towards but the reality isn't always the case.

@Andrew Shotland
1. In 2018, I tested disavowing over 200 referring domains. Site traffic didn’t improve or decline; it remained flat for three months and then increased due to other activities like adding new content and PR.
2. In 2022, based on past experience, I reached out to site owners instead, warning them I’d disavow their domains if they didn’t remove my links. This approach was more effective than the disavow tool.
3. @Cyrus Shepard in his blog also concludes that disavowing isn’t as effective anymore. You can read here

@Mika Lepistö I just concluded my personal experience with disavow tool. Also any action should be taken if there is a traffic or ranking loss. @Andrew Shotland have you noticed any decline in traffic?

I'm sorry, but this conversation feels confrontational.
Why couldn't it just have been started sharing this anecdotal and one other opposing experience/data point in the beginning?
This is a positive and collaborative community. I'd like to see it remain that way despite discussing opposing viewpoints.

From what i know Google uses the disavow tool mostly to know which websites are spammy. I haven't seen negative anchor text on backlinks impact organic traffic in a long time. I have seen it done a lot in the affiliate industry (especially gambling) it was a go to strategy some time ago though ????

@Mika Lepistö fwiw I did not take @Kuldeep sharma's comment as confrontational at all. He was making a joke about penis enlargement, which is basically required whenever this subject is mentioned.

If you are planning to diavow a big list of urls, try my gpt.
It will highlight and group by domains that has more than 3 links.
Expect good visual and tool to save time.
Once you get the file from gpt, sort it alphabetically
Let me know if you use this.
